What We're Doing

Gearing Up for Hurricane Season

We are busy getting prepared for another hurricane season. Although we are hoping that this is another “quiet” year, forecasts by hurricane experts Phil Klotzbach and William Grey of Colorado State University indicate the following:

PROBABILITIES AT LEAST ONE MAJOR (CATEGORY 3-4-5) HURRICANE LANDFALL ON EACH OF THE FOLLOWING COASTAL AREAS in 2007:
1) Entire U.S. coastline - 74% (average for last century is 52%)
2) U.S. East Coast Including Peninsula Florida - 50% (average for last century is 31%)
3) Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle westward to Brownsville - 49% (average for last century is 30%)

One of our main goals is to have contact with every Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in our coverage region. This will enhance our ability to serve, should a disaster strike.

Seeking Volunteers

This year we are looking to make connections with potential volunteers so that we’ll be prepared for whatever arises. Having a core group of volunteers will allow us to do some quick, basic training to help keep everyone safe and effective in whatever situation we find ourselves. Check the How to Help section for details or call the office at 904-726-0565.

Getting Trained

Part of being a responsive and responsible disaster relief non-profit organization is keeping up-to-date and expanding our knowledge base. To that end, members of the From Jacksonville With Love staff have attended several workshops this year, including:

  • Unaffiliated Volunteer Management Training and Exercise
  • Community Emergency Response Team training
  • Hands On Jacksonville training

Networking

We are working with a variety of local, regional, and national organizations to become part of the disaster relief network. While we will always have our own mission and do things in our own way, we also don’t want to add to the chaos of a disaster situation. Working in concert with other relief agencies and having contacts within the first responder community helps us to serve the people we exist to support.
